PERSONAL SAFETY DO'S & DON'TS

I.  Walking

  - Plan route to avoid dark areas
  - Avoid walking too close to buildings - doorways
  - Avoid groups
  - If someone follows you - cross the street - head to public area/store
  - Don't stop to give time/change/matches - You don't have any
  - Avoid cars parked on street w/engine running
  - If car stops - stay more than arms-length away
  - Walk against traffic - suspect will have to turn vehicle around to follow you
  - Don't take rides
  - If waiting for bus - stay under bright street light - away from curb
  - On bus - sit by driver
  - Vary routine

II.  Driving

  - Lock doors while driving
  - Don't pick up hitchhikers
  - If car breaks down - turn on flashes, raise hood, lock doors, wait for help - ask to
    phone for help but don't open door
  - Park in well lit areas
  - Check back seat
  - Have key ready

III.  Shopping

  - Don't wear expensive jewelry
  - Keep purse, wallet, money in possession at all times, especially when trying on
    clothes
  - Put packages in trunk - use package pick-up
  - Have key ready
  - Check back seat

IV.  Carrying Money

  - Don't flash cash
  - Women use zip purse/shoulder style
  - Men carry two wallets (one with false I.D., etc.) give fake wallet during robbery
  - If you can avoid it - don't carry purse or wallet
  - Use direct deposit for checks, when possible

V.  Dress/Posture

  - Don't dress seductively
  - Walk "confidently" - if you look vulnerable, you probably are

VI.  Special "Tips"

  - Avoid elevators with one person and push buttons for all floors to give yourself an
    escape if needed
  - Avoid laundromats at night
  - Avoid public restrooms unless there is medium/heavy traffic
  - Answering machine: Never say you're not at home, never say when you'll return,
    always say we - not I
  - If you live alone, put initials or "Jones Family," etc. on your mailbox - not single
    name
