The in-game console is a valuable tool when gaming with the Half-Life client.  While the following
instructions were based on a windows 2000 system, the instructions are basically the same for all
win95/98/98SE/win2K.  It's not difficult to do, just follow the directions below.

Begin by right-clicking the Half-Life shortcut and looking for the shortcut properties option....you should wind up with something like this:

right-click screen shot

In my case, I have both windows 98 second Edition and Windows 2000 on the same hard drive, so the drive letter on your shortcut properties may look different.

this is the shortcut properties BEFORE making any changes

The important thing is to ONLY Add the -console text to the end of the target command line.  Please note that there is a space between hl.exe and the -console text you just added.

Click Apply and close the properties dialog.

Double-click your Half-Life shortcut and allow the client to start as usual.

Once you are in the game, press the tilde(~) key (to the left of the number 1), and the in-game console will drop halfway down, allowing you to not only review what the game players have been saying, but also allow you to type commands for specific game options such as binding actions to keys.

Here's a screen capture to show off the console.

I hope this little tutorial is helpful.
